Farewell to a Legend: World's Oldest Man Passes Away at 114

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora: The World's Oldest Man Who Witnessed a Century of Change

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, a remarkable man from Venezuela, held the title of the world's oldest verified living man until his passing on April 2nd, 2024, at the incredible age of 114 years and 311 days.

Born on May 27th, 1909, in El Cobre, Venezuela, Juan Vicente's life spanned a period of immense historical change. He witnessed the first two decades of the 20th century, including the horrors of World War I and the societal transformations that followed.

His longevity first gained national recognition in Venezuela in May 2020. Soon after, in July of the same year, he surpassed the record for the oldest known Venezuelan ever, held by Carmen Pacheco de Carrasco (111 years, 51 days). Following rigorous verification by Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS) in January 2021, the world learned about Juan Vicente's extraordinary lifespan.

A Life Well-Lived

Details about Juan Vicente's daily life are a bit scarce, but reports suggest he was a farmer who began working alongside his father and brothers at the young age of five. He reportedly continued working in agriculture throughout his life, even while serving as a sheriff responsible for resolving land and family disputes within his community.

Perhaps most intriguing is his attributed secret to longevity: a combination of hard work, getting enough rest, going to bed early, enjoying a daily glass of aguardiente (a strong liquor), and most importantly, a strong faith and love for God.

His resilience is further highlighted by his reported survival of COVID-19 in 2020. This speaks volumes about his overall health and the strength he carried throughout his long life.

Legacy

Juan Vicente's passing marked the end of an era. He was the last surviving man verified to have been born in the first decade of the 20th century, a living link to a bygone period. News of his death garnered tributes from Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who praised him for bringing recognition to the country.

Juan Vicente's story transcends his age. It's a testament to the human spirit, the power of hard work and a positive outlook, and the enduring strength found in faith. His life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the vast historical changes witnessed by a single generation.
